Tesla made half a million electric cars in 2020

The electric carmaker Tesla announced that it made more than half a million cars in 2020. Tesla is a still-developing company. It’s still tiny compared to the bigger brands. Tesla announced that this s an important milestone for their company. It has built 509,737 EVs before the year began. Just three years ago the milestone seemed unreachable. It’s a huge leap over the 367,500 deliveries from 2019 and not to mention in the pandemic-struck in the car market.

Many of these produced cars were more affordable Model 3 and Model Y units. Only 54,805 of them or just under 10.8% were upscale Model S and Model X machines. As the 179,757 EVs made in the fourth quarter of 2020 represent over 35 % of the company’s production for the year, Tesla was ramping things up to the end of the year.

”Tesla is still a small company compared to larger brands. While the luxury-oriented BMW still managed to sell over 2.5 million, GM sold 7.7 million cars in its 2019 fiscal year.

It is interesting to see whether Tesla would be able to maintain the same momentum in 2021 as well.

Tesla started a factory in China and that gave them a huge boost in their sales in the country. For those who didn’t know, China is the largest market in the world for electric cars. Tesla has already started to build factories in Berlin and Austin. According to the sources Mr Musk is planning to make Tesla’s pickup truck and a battery-powered semi-truck in Texas and he is now in the state to supervise.

Despite the successes, Tesla is facing its own share of challenges as well. The most profitable vehicles of the company are the Model S luxury sedan and Model X S.U.V. The sales of these 2 vehicles have remained low throughout the year. The regulators are in scrutiny on the suspension failures of these vehicles. Questions have been raised about the quality of vehicles they produce as well.

Tesla has global attention now, as Mr Musk promised to manufacture one million self-driving Teslas by the end of 2020. Surprisingly we are yet to see a Tesla which could operate sans a driver.
