It is a well-known fact that the COVID-19 pandemic made sure that a lot of people are working from home and hence the demand for Chromebook showed a huge hike. Now the numbers have come and for us to see how much this increase in demand was. As per 9to5Google, Canalys estimates say that the shipments of Chromebooks were more than doubled in 2020. Laptops in number were 14.7 million and ended up at 30.7 million.
Most of the PC makers also were benefitting out of the circumstances. The shipments of Samsung increased by fourfold and it was 1.9 million. Lenova was on the profiting end as well because they were able to ship 6.8 million PCs.
The last quarter of 2020 was when the growth went to its peak. The Chromebook numbers of Lenovo was increased by 1,766 percent. Other than Acer, whose shipments were grown by merely 76%, all other brands were winners.
Canalys said that they expected this hike, as the second wave of COVID-19 persuaded everything thing to be done online. When it comes to the education, it could not be done without the help of a laptop. The situation demanded one. This is when Chromebook came into the picture as they are inexpensive and the maintenance is easy when compared with the conventional laptops. Hence, most of the students opted for Chromebooks.
Even the demand for tablets hiked up by a significant amount, as it showed growth in shipments from 28%. Biggest demand were for Apple, Samsung and Lenova. We can accept that work and education from home made these numbers possible. But at the same time, we can’t neglect the contribution from them who purchased these devices to watch their favorite content. It is always relaxing when you are stuck at home to have some entertainment in our lives with some latest movies or web browsing.
